PUBLICATION, CONFERENCE AND OUTREACH

Through publication, conference and outreach, the Center for Global Health Studies is rapidly establishing a reputation as a think tank and resource center in the global health policy community.

Dr. Yanzhong Huang, the Center’s Director, is well-established in the field and has been instrumental in fostering research and scholarship. He has written extensively on global health governance, health security, and China's public health. His monograph "Mortal Peril: Public Health in China and Its Security Implications," was published by the Chemical and Biological Arms Control Institute (CBACI). His research on China's SARS crisis was published by the National Academy of Sciences and quoted by Foreign Affairs. His articles on global health appear in Harvard Health Policy Review, Harvard Asian Quarterly, and Journal on Contemporary China. His most recent research focuses on the security implications of pandemic flu.

Dr. Huang was a visiting fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC. He is frequently invited to present at invitation-only conferences hosted by prestigious institutions, including Harvard, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Council on Foreign Relations, CSIS, and the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

In November 2004, the Center co-sponsored an international conference in Washington, DC with CSIS on China's HIV/AIDS demography. In April 2006, the Center hosted a national conference entitled, "Health and Governance: Where are the Linkages?" The conferences not only highlighted the Whitehead School of Diplomacy's leadership role in offering innovative programs in international studies, but also helped boost its reputation within policy communities as a resource center for health security research.

Dr. Huang has frequently received media interviews from Reuters, Associated Press, Radio Free Asia (RFA), and was quoted by ABCNews.com, MSNBC.com, Wall Street Journal, American Medical News, Newsday, and the Boston Globe on global health issues. His Op-Ed piece, "Beijing keeps light reign after SARS," appeared in The Toronto Star, the largest daily newspaper in Canada. He was the guest expert taking questions at "WashingtonPost.com: Live Online" on avian flu. Supported by U.S. government travel grants, he was also a frequent guest speaker for Voice of America's TV programs "Issues and Opinions" and "Health Forum."
