AWARDS AND FELLOWSHIPS

Students at the Whitehead School of Diplomacy share a commitment to outstanding scholarly performance. A majority of undergraduate students receive merit-based financial aid and consistently appear on the Dean’s list at Seton Hall. Furthermore, our undergraduates have been selected to receive prestigious nationally recognized academic honors, including the esteemed Harry S. Truman Scholarship and Fulbright Scholarship.

The Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Students works directly with our students to help them apply for awards and fellowships. There are numerous opportunities which are available for students to pursue once enrolled in the program. While the following list is not exhaustive, it will help you begin your search in finding sources to support your education financially. As a recipient of a scholarship or fellowship from one of these renowned foundations, you can distinguish yourself not only academically, but personally and professionally.

Truman Scholarship
Amount: $30,000
Eligibility: Applicants must be in the upper quarter of their Junior class. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA, be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national and have a major that permits admission to a graduate program leading to a career in government or public service.

Institute for International Public Policy
Amount: Varies-covers the cost of 5 summer institutes/language training, plus graduate study expenses
Eligibility: Students must be in their sophomore year, enrolled in a four-year institution. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a minimum GPA of 3.2 and a strong interest in a career in international service. Additionally, this award is designed for underrepresented minorities: African American, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian, Asian American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander

Pickering Fellowship
Amount: Tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years of college and during the first year of graduate study with reimbursement for books and one round trip travel.
Eligibility: This award is available for U.S. citizens. Applicants must be a sophomore at the time of application with a minimum GPA of 3.2. Fellows must commit to pursuing a graduate degree in international studies at one of the graduate schools identified by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation (WWNFF).

Marshall Scholarships
Amount: Awards average $28,000/yr for two years.
Eligibility: For undergraduate or graduate study in a British University or college for two years. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, have a minimum GPA of 3.7 and hold a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, applicants must present an academic plan and demonstrate potential to make a significant contribution to society.

J. William Fulbright Grants
Amount: Varies—covers the cost of research or study abroad.
Eligibility: Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen and hold a bachelor’s degree before the beginning date of the grant. Additionally, students must present a study plan or project which can be completed in one academic year.

James Madison Graduate Fellowships
Amount: Up to $24,000
Eligibility: For students who demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to becoming a secondary school teacher of American history, government, or social studies. Students must: be a U.S. Citizen and a college senior or recent graduate, have a competitive GPA and plan to pursue full-time graduate study. Additionally, those who receive the award must teach secondary school for no less than one year for each full academic year of study under the fellowship.

National Security Education program (David Boren Undergraduate Scholarship)
Amount: Varies depending on length of program and financial need: minimum $2,500 to Maximum $20,000
Eligibility: For students interested in traveling abroad to study a foreign language. Applicants must be enrolled in a four-year institution at the time of application.

Rhodes Scholarship
Amount: Varies. Covers tuition and living costs for two years at Oxford University
Eligibility: Candidates must: Be between eighteen and twenty-four years of age, be a U.S. citizen and unmarried, have a minimum GPA of 3.7, complete the bachelor’s degree for admission by Oxford College, demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, concern for others, and a fondness for and success in sports.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
Amount: Up to $5,000 for study abroad
Eligibility: Candidates must: be a U.S. citizen—permanent residents are not eligible, be an undergraduate student in good standing at a U.S. institution of higher education, be currently receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at the time of application—“Pell Eligible” status does not apply, be applying to or accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student’s home institution. The award does apply to students studying abroad in a country that is currently under a travel warning issued by the United States Department of State.

College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS)
Amount: Varies
Eligibility: CCIS runs various programs for opportunities to study abroad. Some Scholarships are available. Candidates must: be at least 18 years old; be a college sophomore, junior, or senior, or graduate student; have at least a 2.5 GPA; be nominated by home institution

Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Amount: Covers Graduate Tuition at Cambridge University
Eligibility: Candidates must: be accepted into Cambridge University; have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, have a high GPA and above-average GRE scores.

Freeman Asia Program
Amount: Varies on the location and duration of the program.
Eligibility: The Freeman Asia program supports US undergraduates to study in the following countries: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Candidates must: be a U.S. citizen; a student in good academic standing; have at least one semester of study remaining at the his/her home institution; receive need-based financial aid; be accepted to a study abroad program in one of the countries listed above

Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowships
Amount: $5,000
Eligibility: Candidates must be accepted as U.S. Department of State Internships. Other requirements may apply, please visit website to review these.

Rotary Scholarships
Amount: Up to $25,000
Eligibility: Awards are for study abroad programs. Applicants must be a citizen of country in which there are Rotary clubs. Applicants must have completed at least two years of college-level coursework or equivalent professional experience before commencing their scholarship studies. Initial application must be made through a Rotary club in the applicant's legal or permanent residence or place of full-time study or employment.

Ronald H. Brown Commercial Service Fellowships
Amount: The program pays tuition, room and board, travel, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years, as well as during the first year of graduate study
Eligibility: The Program is designed to afford an increasing number of promising and culturally diverse students the opportunity to prepare for professional careers in the Commercial Foreign Service. The mission of the Commercial Service is to help American companies expand their sales in international markets.

The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award
Amount: $10,000
Eligibility: The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides an annual stipend of $10,000 for a graduating college senior to pursue public service anywhere in the world. The Award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity for up to one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career.

The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship
Amount: The Fellows will receive a stipend of $1,800 per month and health insurance, plus travel expenses to Washington, DC.
Eligibility: Prospective Fellows are expected to demonstrate excellent academic accomplishments and a strong interest in issues of peace and security. Graduate study, a college major, course work, or substantial independent reading that reflects the substantive focus of the fellowship is also a plus. Prior experience with public-interest activism or advocacy is highly desirable. It is preferred, but not required, that such activities be focused on peace and security issues.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Language Study
Amount: Fellowships cover tuition or tutoring expenses at a graduate student level necessary to pursue a year of full-time language study in Asia, plus living and study expenses
Eligibility: Applicants must be pursuing an academic, professional, or business career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language; must have a college undergraduate degree; be at or near an advanced level in the language; be able to devote oneself exclusively to language study during the term of the grant; Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
