DISTINGUISHED VISITING SCHOLAR PROGRAM
Hosted by the Whitehead School of Diplomacy, this newly-created program focused on the study of the United Nations will
attract high-level diplomatic and policy practitioners and senior academic scholars. The distinguished visiting scholars divide
their time between the Whitehead School and UNA-USA. At the Whitehead School the scholars participate in the intellectual
life of the School and strengthen the curriculum on international organizations by teaching courses and conducting research in
their area of expertise. At UNA-USA, the scholars interact directly with the United Nations community and actively participate
in policy analysis by publishing working papers and policy briefs.
The first of these scholars has been made possible through a generous gift from Tom and Ruth Sharkey along with the support of the UNA-USA.
Ambassador Richard S. Williamson was named the inaugural
Thomas J. and Ruth Sharkey Distinguished Visiting
Scholar of UN Studies in 2006. Williamson served as
Ambassador and U.S. Representative to the United
Nations for Special Political Affairs and also as
Ambassador and U.S. Representative to the UN
Commission on Human Rights. As visiting scholar, he has hosted a series
of international affairs lectures, contributed to
the Whitehead Journal of Diplomacy, taught
graduates and undergraduate classes, and consulted with
students on their research. For more information,

The Distinguished Visiting Scholar Program enables Seton Hall and the UNA-USA to take a leading role in bringing together academic scholarship and policy development on the UN.
