Profile
S. Azmat Hassan joined the Whitehead School of Diplomacy in the Fall of 2000 after thirty three years as a diplomat for Pakistan. His accomplished career has included postings as Ambassador of Pakistan to Malaysia, Syria and Morocco, and Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in New York. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pakistan, Ambassador Hassan held numerous assignments including Director General for Afghanistan, and Additional Secretary of the Middle East Division. He also served as Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister of Pakistan for Foreign Affairs and Defense.
Ambassador Hassan has represented the Whitehead School in numerous conferences and serves on the boards of organizations including the New Jersey Division of the UNA-USA, the Center for War/Peace Studies, and the Center for UN Reform Education. A frequent commentator on international affairs for television and radio, Ambassador Hassan also writes widely on foreign affairs for the international press. His articles and perspectives appear regularly in the Daily Record of New Jersey, the New Jersey Star-Ledger and Dawn Karachi.
Honored by King Mohamed VI of Morocco for his promotion of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Morocco, Ambassador Hassan holds a M.A. in Economics from Cambridge University and a M.Sc. in Strategic Studies from Quaid-E-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan.
