Special Advising on the Prevention of Genocide
Dr. Francis Deng was appointed by U.N. Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon in May 2007 as the Special Advisor on the Prevention
of Genocide. Dr. Deng served as Representative of the UN
Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons from 1992
to 2004, as Human Rights Officer in the UN Secretariat from
1967 to 1972 and as the Ambassador of the Sudan to Canada,
Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the United States. He
also served as Sudan's Minister of State for Foreign
Affairs. Dr. Deng has authored and edited over 30 books in
related fields and is the recipient of numerous awards in
his country and abroad. On Wednesday, November 5, Dr. Deng addressed
the Seton Hall Community in the Chancellor's Suite of the
University Center. Dr. Deng spoke about his path to his
current position and shared some details about the work he
is presently involved in with the U.N. Students had the
opportunity to meet and greet Dr. Deng following his
presentation for additional, informal conversation.
Vaschetto Recognized for Service Above Self
On Thursday, October 30th, 2008 the South Orange Rotary
recognized Sofia Vaschetto at the Second Annual Service
Above Self Awards Dinner. Vaschetto was one of five
individuals to receive this award which commends South
Orange residents for selflessly addressing unmet needs of
the local or global community. In addition to the housing
assistance she regularly provides to incoming Whitehead
School students, Sofia has recently participated in multiple
efforts to spread awareness of the benefits and challenges
associated with the concept of microfinance. During the
summer of 2007, she served as an intern at the Grameen Bank,
a microfinance organization and community development bank
based in Bangladesh which provides credit without requiring
collateral. Additionally, over the course of the last year
she has been working as the Executive Editor of the Journal
of Diplomacy to collaboratively produce a Journal issue
dedicated to this subject. Thank you, Sofia, for your
dedication to the cause of microfinance and your tireless
servant leadership!
Lund University Delegation Visits SHU
A delegation
of eight students from the Association
of Foreign Affairs at Lund University in Sweden (www.lu.se/lund-university)
visited Seton Hall University on Wednesday, October
29th as part of a study tour centered on the upcoming U.S.
presidential election. The delegation sought to expand
its knowledge of U.S. democracy and American politics
through both informal dialogue and also a moderated panel
discussion. This discussion gave the visiting students, and
all others who attended, the opportunity to discuss key
issues relevant to the 2008 presidential election and learn
more about U.S. domestic and international policy from a
student perspective. Dr. Patrick Fisher from the Department
of Political Science as well as representatives from Seton
Hall's Democratic, Republican, Libertarian and Socialist
student organizations offered remarks as members of the panel.
This event was co-sponsored by the Whitehead
Journal of Diplomacy, the Undergraduate Diplomacy Student
Association, and the Whitehead School of Diplomacy. Check

International Human Rights Law -
Panel Discussion
On Tuesday, October 21st at
2pm in the Diplomacy Room of McQuaid Hall, a group of human
rights legal experts from the Ukraine participated in an
interactive panel discussion. Professor Elizabeth Wilson,
the School's resident human rights specialist served as a
member of the panel and Dr. Philip Moremen
moderated the discussion. This event is served as an excellent opportunity for
students to learn about different perspectives concerning
international human rights law, particularly from U.S. and
Ukrainian perspectives, and interact directly with
practitioners of international human rights law. The
International Law Society, Graduate Diplomacy Council and
the Whitehead Journal of Diplomacy and International
Relations co-sponsored the event.
Foreign Editor Roy Gutman to Deliver Keynote Address at
Annual Dean's Welcome
Ambassador John Menzies, Dean of the Whitehead School, formally welcomed diplomacy students to campus on Monday,
September 29th, at 3:00pm in the Jubilee Hall Auditorium.
Special guest, Roy Gutman of the McClatchy Newsgroup delivered the keynote address. Prior to his position with the
McClatchy Newsgroup, Gutman was the diplomatic correspondent
for Newsweek, the director of American University's
Crimes of War Project, and a foreign correspondent for
Newsday. He won the Pulitzer Price for his 1993 coverage
of the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and has been the recipient
of numerous other honors. Gutman is the author of How We
Missed the Story: Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban and the
Hijacking of Afghanistan; Crimes of War 2.0: What the Public
Should Know; A Witness to Genocide; Banana Diplomacy: The
Making of American Foreign Policy in Nicaragua in 1981-87,
and other writings. He holds an M.A. in international
relations from the London School of Economics.
Journal of Diplomacy Hosts Launch Event
for Upcoming Issue on Microfinance

On Monday, September 8th the Whitehead Journal of Diplomacy
and International Relations staff hosted a launch
event to promote its latest issue: Microfinance. This issue
focuses on the role of microfinance as a tool for poverty
alleviation, and includes articles by Jeffrey Sachs and
other distinguished scholars. Ambassador Menzies and
Journal staff spoke about the issue and the

Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad Addresses SHU Community
The
Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations
welcomed Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad, Thursday, April 17.
Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad, currently the United States Permanent
Representative to the United Nations, has held the highest
U.S. diplomatic posts in Iraq and Afghanistan, giving him a
unique perspective on America’s foreign policy in the Middle
East and throughout the world. Dr. Khalilzad's remarks
examined some of today’s most pressing global issues and the
challenges he faces on the frontline of American diplomacy.
Religion's
Role In Diplomacy

Last semester, the Whitehead School of Diplomacy,
in partnership with the United
Nations University and the United States Institute of Peace,
hosted
a panel discussion “Religion in Multilateralism: Dodging
the Pitfalls of Extremism” at the United Nations
Headquarters in New York. The panel addressed the role of
religion in diplomacy as a source of shared values and as a
means to promote peace. Designed as a conversation between
leading experts and audience members, the forum sought to
address: How can education help avoid the pitfalls of
stereotyping and polarization? What can individuals and
institutions do to promote a healthier understanding of
religion? Can we find a new model for engaging religion in
constructive ways through education and multilateral
organizations? Ambassador John Menzies moderated the
discussion among Dr. Qamar-ul Huda, U.S. Institute of Peace;
Dr. David Little, Harvard University; Rev. Dr. David Steele,
International Center for Conciliation; Dr. Gisella Webb,
Seton Hall University. Twenty-five graduate and
undergraduate students from the Whitehead School and more
than 100 representatives from permanent missions and NGO's
participated in the forum.
Center
For Global Health Studies Launches New Journal
Global Health Governance the new peer-reviewed journal,
published by the Whitehead’s School’s Center for Global
Health Studies is now available online at
http://www.ghgj.org.
Published bi-annually, Global Health Governance provides a
platform for multidisciplinary academics and practitioners
to explore global health issues and their implications for
governance and security at national and international
levels. Dr. Yanzhong Huang, Associate Professor at the
Whitehead School, is the Center’s director and is also the
Editor-in-Chief of Global Health Governance. The new
publication, Huang explains, “is Seton Hall’s only
peer-reviewed journal and the first in the nation explicitly
devoted to the new health security paradigm.” The debut
issue explores how citizens’ health affects the state’s
political, economic and social stability and viability as
well as its international presence.
Global Current, Student Radio Show
Get in on a Global Current! Seton Hall's international
news radio show
launched last spring and is always looking for passionate
undergraduate diplomacy students to get involved. The show

Graduate Student Meets President Bush
Graduate Student
Doris Gonzalez was pleased to present Interim Dean Holmes with a copy of
the New York Times, autographed by President Bush on behalf
of the Whitehead School. Gonzales interned with the U.S.
Mission to the United Nations. While attending a reception
at the Mission during the General Assembly, she met the
President and asked for his autograph of a front-page
article about the G.A.
