Whitehead School To Honor Andrew Liveris at 2007 Global Leadership Gala

November 6, 2007

The Whitehead School will be honoring Mr. Andrew Liveris, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Dow Chemical Company at its 2007 Global Leadership Gala on Thursday, 6 December at the Winter Garden, World Financial Center in New York City.

The Whitehead School's annual Gala honors individuals whose biography, philosophy and experience embody the concept of global citizenship. In selecting Mr. Liveris as this year’s honoree, the Whitehead School has focused on his leadership in the area of climate change and sustainable development. As a member of the United States Climate Action Partnership, Mr. Liveris has joined with other businesses and leading environmental organizations to call on the federal government to quickly enact strong national legislation to require significant reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.

Through Mr. Liveris' commitment to key global issues, Dow Chemical has collaborated with the United Nations on a number of environmental topics, including efforts to provide access to clean and safe water. He has pledged to use the company’s resources to develop new technologies for creating safer, more sustainable water supplies for communities around the world. In order to bring awareness to this compelling issue, Mr. Liveris and Dow Chemical have partnered with the Blue Planet Foundation to sponsor the “Blue Planet Run”, the first ever global endurance run designed to raise awareness of – and funds for – clean water projects around the world.

No less significant are Dow’s sustainability goals for the year 2015, which specifically address energy and climate change, global food supply, personal health and safety, safe and affordable housing, and access to clean water. In developing these goals, Mr. Liveris and Dow looked to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals for guidance. The selection of Andrew Liveris as the Whitehead School’s Global Leader is a fitting testament to his work and leadership throughout the years.

In addition to honoring a distinguished global citizen, the Gala serves to raise much-needed funding for the Whitehead School’s endowment. This endowment has enabled the School to serve as a forum in which world leaders convene to discuss critical global issues right here on the Seton Hall campus and thus ensuring the success of such a young School.
