CAMPUS AND VICINITY
The Whitehead School of Diplomacy is located on the main campus of Seton Hall University in suburban South Orange, New Jersey. Administrative and faculty offices are housed in McQuaid Hall, across from the athletic fields and just off the University Green. The campus encompasses 58 acres of academic buildings, student residences, and green space. The Immaculate Conception Chapel and President’s Hall display the historic nature of the University, while the Walsh Library and Jubilee Hall represent advanced technology and award-winning contemporary architecture. Campus facilities include a fitness center with multiple gyms and a swimming pool, a theater in the round, a full cafeteria and other food vendors, two art galleries, a technology help center, a student lounge, a coffee shop, laundry facilities, and many computer labs.
The quaint downtown of South Orange Village is a fifteen minute walk from campus. A popular gathering place for students, the Village is known for its shops, cafés, antique street lights, and outdoor concert series. Moreover, the South Orange Train Station provides easy access to New York City.
Bordering South Orange, the South Mountain Reservation holds over 2,000 acres of hardwood trees, tall hemlocks, sprinkled with streams, creeks and ponds. Located within this part of the Watchung Mountain Range are the west branch of the Rahway River, a 25-foot waterfall at Hemlock Falls, a reservoir and watershed, the Turtle Back Zoo and the South Mountain Arena. Scenic vistas of New York and Staten Island can be viewed from the Mountain’s eastern ridge.
The nearby city of Newark is host to New Jersey’s Performing Arts Center, the Newark Museum, and the popular Ironbound Section, recognized for its many restaurants and bakeries. Hoboken, with its beautiful Hudson River waterfront overlooking the Manhattan skyline, is a 20 minute destination by train from the South Orange Station. Popular among college students and young professionals, Hoboken offers a vibrant commercial downtown and nightlife. In addition, South Orange’s neighboring suburban towns of Maplewood, Millburn, West Orange, and Montclair, are easily accessible and provide a variety of cultural opportunities.
